QuitDoc Foundation speaks to employers at the Hobe Sound Chamber breakfast for the Great American Smoke Out
November 15, 2018

HOBE SOUND, Fla. — The QuitDoc Foundation and the Tobacco Free Partnership of Martin County recently presented at the October 11 breakfast hosted by the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce, speaking to employers about the benefits of going tobacco free.

Foundation staff and partnership advisory council members shared crucial information on employer-sponsored cessation efforts and the cost-saving benefits of going tobacco free, and encouraged the business owners in attendance to participate in the upcoming Great American Smoke Out.

The Great American Smoke Out was observed on November 15, and participating workplaces provided their employees with the free tools to quit, as well as support and on-site cessation classes, in order to increase their success in going tobacco free.

Each attendee received a cost savings piggy bank to “bank” their savings from going tobacco free.  They also received information on the Tobacco Free Florida Quit Your Way program, providing free cessation support and counseling.

Employers experience an estimated $4,056 in productivity loss and $2,056 in medical costs for each employee that uses tobacco products.  However, in Florida, all residents have access to the free Quit Your Way program, with online and phone counseling options as well as face-to-face classes.  Several employers in Martin County have adopted on-site classes, which are free for both the employer and the employee.

The best part?  Employees with a supportive work environment are finding it easier to quit smoking.  Advantages like decreased health insurance costs and better use of sick time certainly help, but spending eight-hours a day with co-workers and employers rooting for success is an added perk.

One of the goals of the Tobacco Free Partnership of Martin County is to increase access to cessation services for all Martin County residents, and to help local workplaces adopt policies to aid the communication of those services.

The Tobacco Free Partnership of Martin County is dedicated to the creation of tobacco-free social norms through a combination of community education, youth advocacy and changes in local tobacco policies.  The mission of the Tobacco Free Partnership of Martin County reflects the goals of the CDC Best Practices, especially in regards to changes in local tobacco policies to create and promote tobacco-free social norms.
